Chief economist of the EBRD's Erik Bertglof says that Slovenia has too many banks and that part of the solution to their problems must be their union, and that larger banks  should takeover  the small ones.

– A key agreement are on the rules of the game – what  the government expects, what is expected of the government, what will be the rules for Slovenian and foreign banks, and what we expect from international institutions, said to the question whether Slovenia should solve its problems alone.

He says that EBRD could provide assistance.

– We can assist in the restructuring of banks and corporate access to finance and for that we need rules of the game, says Berglof.

EBRD, according to him, is opened for acquisition of shareholdings in some of Slovenian banks.

– It is important that we have an agreement on an outer box, and the obligation of government and international institutions to respect the rules of the game. We have two options, to provide debt and equity capital, and we can provide technical assistance, says Berglof.
